Many legends and myths are related to Tomaszow Mazowiecki. These are some of them:
Tomaszow Mazowiecki`s coat of arms
As the legend has it: "...The English King had two children, a son and a
daughter. On his deathbed, he endowed the son with the king`s authority, and the
daughter with real estates and the royal treasure. As the girl was greatly
admired, her brother was afraid of losing the estate and, on advice of his
gentry and advisors, he threw her to a ferocious bear. However, the young lady
tamed the dangerous beast at once. When the brother learned, about it, he
apologized his sister and married her to the Prince of Lorraine. The couple had
several sons. Each of them was granted the coat of arms with "a lady on the
bear". Those lads or their descendants spread out all over the continent.
Some of them reached Bohemia and then came to Poland...".
The "Blue Springs" Sanctuary
The legend says: "...In the Swedish invasion period, a part of their troops reached the forest on the Pilica River. The Swedes pitched a camp in the vicinity of the chapel, where they stayed with their horses. Then, a miracle happened. The chapel collapsed along with the troops, and the "Blue Springs" burst forth in that place. The visitors have been enchanted by the sky-blue color of the springs ever since...".
"The Caves of Nagorzyce"
It was the place, where, as the legend has it, a robber named Madej lived. "...The feeling of mercy was unknown to him. He had a heart of stone. He dwelled in the cave in the Mazovian forests with his mother as the only companion. She was the only person he did not dare to raise his murderer`s hand against. However, woe betide a madcap who found himself in the vicinity of the cave, woe betide a traveler whose way led near the robber`s hide-out! No one who wandered over that area was spared. Madej did not spare even his own father...".
